The island

From Lauwersoog you can sail to the island of Schiermonnikoog in 45 minutes. It is often busy on the boat, but once on the island you will be overwhelmed by peace and quiet. Cars hardly drive there, only the residents themselves are allowed to travel by car. So you have come to the right place for peace, space and nature.

What has the beach to offer you?
Schiermonnikoog is the place to be for wide beaches. Almost everywhere it is hundreds of meters wide. To the west is a lagoon, surrounded by sandbanks. You can go there at low tide, but if the water rises you cannot return. Then, you must wait for the next low tide. The bathing beaches are mainly on the north and west coasts. The busiest part is at the Prins Bernhardweg. Swimming supervision is available. The beach slopes gently here. Children can play safely here.

A look in the village
There is one residential area on Schiermonnikoog, Schiermonnikoog. The oldest part dates from 1720. In 1944, new construction began on the east side of the core. The old part of the village is characterized by characteristic island houses. Here and there you can still see old wind walls. Shops, restaurants and hotels surround the old houses in the center.

Sights
When you visit Schiermonnikoog you should definitely visit Hotel van der Werff. This building was once a law, council and post office. There is still a special historical atmosphere. The Whale Jaws are also worth a visit. They were taken by Captain Klaas Visser (former captain of the 'Willem Barentz'). You will find them in the park. In the village you will find the visitor center Het Baken. Here you will learn all about the history, but also about the beauty that the island still has to offer. The restaurant Wad Anderz is located at the marina where you can enjoy delicious meals. You also have a beautiful view over the Wadden Sea. The nature reserve has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2009.

A little further away
Schiermonnikoog is one large, connected nature reserve. It has been qualified as a National Park by the Dutch government. Rightly so! This island is one large area with forests and dune landscapes. This is also the reason that you are not allowed to take your car to the island. The nature there is so special because half of all plants and flowers that occur in the Netherlands can be found on the island. Highly recommended if you are a nature lover.
